Dr. Sreejith Thampy J is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Bangalore with a focused shoulder and sports practice. Trained in shoulder, knee and sports surgery in Bangalore and South Korea, with international fellowships in arthroscopy and sports medicine.
He finished his MBBS in Kerala and his MS in Orthopaedics at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar. After that he chased the specialism rather than settling into general practice. Early in his career he focused on hip and knee replacement, which benefited many patients in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. His aspiration to treat sports injuries then led him to an exclusive two-year training in shoulder, knee and sports injury management at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, as well as advanced fellowships in Seoul, South Korea. He is also a FIFA certified sports medicine specialist. In his search for minimally invasive sports pain management, he completed multiple fellowships, diplomas and certifications in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal injections and pain management, and is certified in primary care rheumatology.
Most of his surgery is keyhole work, and the rest is focused on exercise-based treatment. The idea is simple: fix the problem in line with the body's natural healing potential using exercises and muscle-balancing techniques, or through the smallest opening that lets him do the job properly, so you heal faster and hurt less afterwards. When an open operation or a joint replacement is the better call, he will tell you that plainly and explain why.
Published papers in national & international journals, mostly on rotator cuff repair and shoulder mechanics.

His fellowship training took him to South Korea, where he studied advanced shoulder arthroscopy and sports injury surgery in Seoul and at Hallym University. He holds a FIFA Diploma in Sports Medicine, a USA diploma in musculoskeletal injection techniques, and a Master's in hip and knee arthroplasty.
Comprehensive care across a wide range of orthopaedic conditions.
Shoulder Arthroplasty & Arthroscopy
Most shoulder problems can now be fixed through two or three small cuts using a camera and fine instruments. Treats rotator cuff tears, frequent dislocation, labral injuries, and frozen shoulder.
Knee & Sports Injuries
The knee takes the worst of most sports. Dr. Thampy handles ACL reconstruction, meniscus tears, cartilage damage, and ligament injuries to get you back safely.
Hip & Knee Replacement
When a joint is worn past the point that physiotherapy or injections can help, a replacement gives you back a joint that does not hurt with every step.
Ultrasound Injections
Using ultrasound to see the exact spot and put the medicine straight into it. Works well for shoulder pain, tennis elbow, and joint inflammation.
Orthopaedic Trauma
Fractures and accident injuries need fixing quickly and well, or they heal crooked. AO Trauma certified for complex breaks and minimally invasive plating.
Primary Care Rheumatology
Not every aching joint needs a surgeon. Assessment of joint pain and early arthritis to work out what is actually going on before anyone reaches for a scalpel.
Foot & Ankle
Ankle sprains that never quite settle, ligament tears, cartilage damage and fractures. Arthroscopic and reconstructive options to get a stable, pain-free foot back under you.
Regenerative Medicine
Using the body's own biology to heal. PRP and bone-marrow concentrate (BMAC) injections for early arthritis, tendon and cartilage problems, where the goal is to repair rather than replace.

Review
Dr. Thampy holds a recommendation rate of 99 percent and above across Practo and MediBuddy. A few words from recent patients.
"I had an ACL tear following a football injury. Dr. Sreejith Thampy performed my ACL reconstruction surgery. Today, 6 months post-surgery, I am back to running and my knee feels incredibly stable. He was extremely patient, explained the procedure clearly, and formulated a stellar physiotherapy program. Incredible shoulder and knee doctor in Bangalore!"

Common Questions,
Clear Answers
Shoulder arthroscopy is his main focus, along with knee and sports injuries. He also does hip and knee replacement, trauma surgery, ultrasound-guided injections and primary care rheumatology.
If pain has lasted more than two or three weeks, wakes you at night, limits how far you can move the joint, or follows an injury that has not settled, it is time to get it checked. Early problems are easier to fix than late ones.
Often, no. Many shoulder and knee problems improve with physiotherapy, injections or time. Dr. Thampy will only recommend surgery when it is the best option for your injury, and he will explain the alternatives first.

Any recent scans or X-rays, your lab reports, and a list of the medicines you take. A short note on when the pain started and what makes it worse helps as well.
It depends on the joint and the injury. Keyhole surgery usually means a faster recovery than open surgery, and Dr. Thampy will give you a recovery plan with clear stages so you know what to expect at each point.

Yes. Bring your scans and reports and Dr. Thampy will give you a straight read on your options, even if you have already seen another surgeon.
At Manipal Hospital on Sarjapur Road in Bellandur, mornings from Monday to Saturday and on Sunday mornings, and at the Manipal Clinic in Sarjapur on weekday evenings. Both are on the Sarjapur Road corridor, so patients from Bellandur, HSR Layout, Koramangala, Whitefield, Marathahalli and Electronic City reach them without crossing the city. Confirm the current timing on the booking page before you travel.
Yes, including patients travelling from Kerala and from other parts of Karnataka. If you are coming a long way, send your scans ahead through the booking page so the consultation can be planned around your trip rather than spread over two visits.
It depends on the procedure, the implants used, the room category and how long you stay, so no honest single figure exists. The hospital billing desk gives you a written estimate before anything is booked, and they will tell you what your insurance policy covers and what it does not. Ask for that estimate at the consultation rather than after admission.
Most arthroscopic and joint replacement procedures are covered by standard Indian health insurance policies, though waiting periods and sub-limits vary by policy. Bring your policy details to the consultation and the hospital insurance desk will confirm the cover and handle the pre-authorisation.
Most people are walking without support within a few weeks and back to running at around three to four months, but returning to pivoting sport such as football, basketball or badminton usually takes nine to twelve months. Going back early is the main reason grafts fail. Dr. Thampy sets return-to-sport milestones on how the knee tests rather than on the calendar.
Many keyhole procedures are. Some need a night in hospital, particularly larger rotator cuff repairs or when other health conditions need watching. You will be told which applies to you before the date is fixed, so you can plan the time off.
Usually, yes. Most frozen shoulders settle with a structured stretching programme, and an ultrasound-guided injection into the joint often speeds that up considerably. Surgery is reserved for the small number of shoulders that stay stiff after months of proper rehabilitation.
Once a shoulder has dislocated more than once it rarely stops on its own, because the labrum and the ligaments that hold it in place have usually torn off the socket. Each further dislocation takes a little more bone with it, which makes the repair bigger. This is one of the injuries where getting it looked at early genuinely changes the operation you need.
